Why does heat help with pain?

The old wives' tale has it that a hot water bottle can relieve pain deep in the body - and now scientists have discovered why. A hot compress can physically shut down the normal pain response involved in stomach aches, period pain or colic.

"The heat doesn't just provide comfort and have a placebo effect - it actually deactivates the pain at a molecular level in much the same way as pharmaceutical painkillers," said Brian King, a senior lecturer in physiology at University College London, who led the research.

Dr King found that if heat is applied to the skin near where internal pain is felt, it switches on heat receptors at the site of injury. These in turn block the body's ability to detect pain.

"Heat is recognised by a group of receptors called transient receptor potential channels," said Dr King. "One of them, TRP1, responds to heat at around 40C. It's known to be on the sensory nerves that supply the internal organs like the gut."

When someone feels pain in the gut, a separate mechanism is firing. Receptors called P2X3 have detected ATP, a chemical that pours out of cells when they are damaged. The heat response appears to shut these receptors down.

"You've got the heat receptor on one side and the ATP receptor on the other side that will recognise the pain. Both are present in our cells and yet, when you activate one, it switches off the other," said Dr King. "What appears to be something that can sense heat can help you get over visceral pain by switching off the pain mechanism."

TRUELY A BRILLIANT PRODUCT!

We put down our baby’s uncomfortableness and screaming to crampy wind giving him a sore tummy. Feeding was a nightmare. He was sucking in wind and his tummy was in knots. We now put his Warmie on before the feed to relax him and soothe his tummy and he feeds beautifully. Thank god for this invention!

Amazing product

I just want to say that you have an amazing product! My boy suffered so bad from colic and nothing was working until my mum purchased the owl for my boy. Absolute life saver. We still use it now when he has a sore tummy and recommend it to anyone when we can 💙💙💙
Thank you!

Warm ease to the

Our twins were born three weeks early and slept in the neonatal unit so well so I assumed it would be the same when we got home. When we finally got to go home our second night we started noticing the twins not settling and constantly crying. We assumed it was the new environment. As time went on we started observing and noticing it was getting worse. Both the twins would cry, their faces would turn bright red and they began to draw their knees up a lot. Not knowing what was going on we researched it and spoke to midwife and she said it sounds like it could be colic. I tried everything with constantly burping them, rubbing their tummies and walking around the house all evening with them. I came across the warm ease product and thought why not give it a try. We started noticing in the evenings when we had the warm ease on their bellies they began to calm down, seem more relaxed and began to drink better, which resulted in them pushing their feedings out from 2 hours to four hours over night meaning we got a little more sleep. We now use it throughout the day as their sleeps became a struggle and they become more settled offering them a sense of security I think.
