How your body blocks pain
Dr Amy Baxter, the inventor of Buzzy, explains Gate Control Theory in plain language. Worth 3 minutes before your child's next vaccination.
Real families. Real results.
"My little girl is excited for her next blood draw now that she has Buzzy."
"Buzzy has made my son's 18-month and 2-year shots SO much easier, for him and for me. He especially loves the distraction cards."
"Our daughter has had type 1 diabetes since age 3. That's over 10,000 shots so far. Buzzy has been an invaluable device in our home."
"Wish I had discovered this product years ago. Bought it for my pre-teen son and it made such a difference."
Everything you want to know
Is Buzzy safe for babies and toddlers?
Yes. Buzzy is drug-free and non-invasive. It uses vibration and cold, the same things you already do instinctively when your child bumps themselves. It has been used in paediatric hospitals worldwide and is backed by over 50 independent clinical trials. Always check with your nurse or doctor if you have any concerns for very young babies.
How is Buzzy different from numbing cream?
Numbing cream takes 45 to 60 minutes to work and only numbs the skin surface. Buzzy works within seconds and blocks the pain signal in the nerve pathway itself. No waiting around, no sticker-and-wait routine before every vaccination. It also reduces fear and anxiety, which numbing cream does not.
Does Buzzy actually work or is it just a distraction?
It is both, and that is by design. The vibration and cold physically block how pain travels to the brain using Gate Control Theory. The bee shape and distraction cards also give younger children something to focus on. Both mechanisms reduce pain and fear, and both are backed by clinical research across 50+ independent trials.
Which Buzzy should I get for home use?
For most families, the Buzzy Personal is the right choice. It comes with reusable ice wings and is designed for home use, vaccinations, and blood draws. If your child has regular injections, it is great value and reusable for years. The Buzzy Healthcare model is built for clinical settings.
Can Buzzy help with needle phobia in children?
Yes. Buzzy is the only clinically proven intervention shown to reduce both needle pain and needle fear at the same time. For children with needle phobia, combining Buzzy with the DistrACTION Cards can significantly reduce anxiety before and during the procedure. Many parents find their child goes from distressed to curious after the first use.
What is VibraCool and how does it work?
VibraCool is a wearable drug-free pain relief device that combines targeted vibration with hot or cold therapy to block pain signals before they reach the brain. You strap it directly over the area that hurts and it gets to work immediately. It is designed for chronic pain, sports injuries, and muscle or joint conditions.
Is VibraCool better than a TENS machine?
VibraCool uses a different mechanism to TENS and in independent clinical trials it outperformed TENS by up to 4 times for pain relief. TENS uses electrical stimulation to interrupt pain signals. VibraCool uses targeted vibration at a specific frequency combined with temperature therapy to block pain at the gate. It is also wearable, hands-free, and requires no pads, gels, or electrode replacements. Many people who have tried a TENS machine without success find VibraCool more effective.
Can I use VibraCool instead of a TENS machine for back pain?
VibraCool is designed for targeted areas like the knee, ankle, elbow, wrist, neck, hip, and heel. For plantar fasciitis and joint pain specifically, it has strong clinical backing. It is not designed for broad lower back coverage the way some TENS machines are. If you are managing a specific joint or muscle area, VibraCool is worth trying, especially if TENS has not given you the relief you expected.
What conditions can VibraCool help with?
VibraCool has models designed for plantar fasciitis and heel pain, knee and ankle pain, elbow and wrist pain, and neck and hip tension. It is also used for post-workout recovery, sports injuries, and managing pain after surgery or injury. All models use the same core vibration and temperature technology, just shaped for different body areas.
Is VibraCool suitable for children too?
VibraCool is designed primarily for adults and older teens managing muscle and joint pain. For needle pain in children, Buzzy is the right device. Get in touch if you are unsure and we will help you choose the right product.
Are Buzzy and VibraCool Medsafe approved?
Yes. Both Buzzy and VibraCool are Medsafe approved for use in New Zealand. They are also FDA cleared in the US and used in hospitals and clinics in over 40 countries. Moosebaby is the official distributor for New Zealand.
What is the difference between Buzzy and VibraCool?
They are made by the same company and use the same core technology, but for different types of pain. Buzzy is designed for needle pain, vaccinations, blood draws, and fear of needles. It sits above the injection site during a procedure. VibraCool is designed for ongoing muscle and joint pain and is worn strapped directly over the painful area. If you are buying for vaccination or injection pain, choose Buzzy. If you are managing a muscle, joint, or chronic pain condition, choose VibraCool.
Do these devices have any side effects?
No significant side effects have been reported in clinical trials. Both devices are non-invasive, drug-free, and work with your body's natural pain response. Some people may find the cold sensation intense at first. If you have a condition affecting circulation or sensation, check with your doctor before use.
